  • Vejam que interessante a hitória de Anna Jarvis, a mulher que se arrependeu de ter criado o dia das mães. Isso mesmo! Ela se arrependeu de ter criado!   • Anna Jarvis morava com sua mãe e seus 12 irmãos,  dos quais apenas quatro viveram até a idade adulta.
  • Sua mãe Ann Reeves Jarvis era muito ativa na Igreja Metodista Episcopal, onde, a partir de 1858, dirigiu clubes de trabalho das mães para combater altas taxas de mortalidade infantil, principalmente devido a doenças que devastaram sua comunidade em Grafton, West Virginia.
  • Nesses grupos, as mães aprendiam sobre higiene e saneamento, como a importância vital de ferver água antes de beber. Os organizadores forneciam remédios e suprimentos para famílias doentes e, quando necessário, colocavam famílias inteiras em quarentena para evitar epidemias.
 
  • Quando Ann Reeves Jarvis morreu, em 1905, cercada pelos quatro filhos sobreviventes, Anna ficou muito triste e, segundo alguns historiadores,  algumas amigas, no intuito de levar algum conforto prepararam uma festa em homenagem a sua falecida mãe. Anna ficou tão emocionada que decidiu estender a festa não somente para as mães que já haviam falecido, como também para as mães vivas.
 
  • Três anos após a morte da mãe dela, o primeiro dia das mães foi celebrado na igreja metodista de Andrews, em Grafton. Anna Jarvis escolheu o segundo domingo de maio porque seria sempre próximo de 9 de maio, o dia em que sua mãe tinha morrido. Anna distribuiu centenas de cravos brancos, a flor favorita de sua mãe, para as mães que compareceram.
  • A festa foi de tamanho sucesso e mesmo que Anna nunca quisesse que a data fosse comercial, logo isso aconteceu. A indústria floral, a indústria de cartões comemorativos e a indústria de doces se promoveram com vendas e presentes para o “dia”, com alta nos preços. A própria indústria de flores ofereceu dinheiro para Anna, pela criação do "Dia das mães", todavia ela não aceitou.
 
  • A partir de então, Anna começou sua luta contra os apelos comerciais para com a data. Anna havia recebido uma herança de seu pai e então, gastou todo o seu dinheiro e sua vida lutando contra a o comércio atrelado a data. Um dos atos finais de Anna, foi ir de porta em porta na Filadélfia pedindo assinaturas para apoiar um pedido de cancelamento do Dia das Mães.
  • Com 80 anos,  estava quase cega, surda e indigente, sendo cuidada em um sanatório na Filadélfia. Há comentários  que as indústrias de flores e cartões pagavam secretamente pelos cuidados de Anna Jarvis, mas nunca se conseguiu confirmar essa informação.
